Our Services

One of the most important decisions you can make is choosing the right financial advisor to work with. That financial advisor will be an excellent resource to help you create an investment plan and guide you in identifying your investment goals and broader financial priorities.

Mutual Funds Icon

Mutual Funds

A mutual fund is a large pool of money that is invested by experts in stocks, bonds or other securities with the goal of growing value of the overall pool. Mutual funds are very popular because they let individual investors, like you, invest in a wide variety of companies and markets in Canada and around the world at a much lower cost than if you bought and sold the stocks, bonds, etc. by yourself.

While some funds can be used for shorter term investing, usually mutual funds are appropriate for longer term investing. That’s because their value fluctuates with the values of the securities they hold and returns are not guaranteed. Short term fluctuations can be quite dramatic, but historically, over the long-term, returns have been higher than from guaranteed investments.

Mutual funds can be held in registered plans like RRSPs, RRIFs, RESPs or some pension plans. They can be also held in non-registered plans.

Segregated Funds Icon

Segregated Funds

Segregated funds are very similar to mutual funds. A large pool of money is invested in stocks, bonds, or other securities with the goal of growing the value of the entire pool. But segregated funds are actually structured as insurance contracts, so they have some benefits that mutual funds do not.

Guarantees – Segregated funds can guarantee 75% to 100% of your contributions (minus withdrawals) when the contract matures, or on your death. The value of the contract is not guaranteed at other times.

Potential creditor protection – If the beneficiary you’ve named qualifies, segregated funds are generally protected against seizure by creditors. This can be a big advantage for business owners and professionals wanting to protect against an unexpected lawsuit or bankruptcy.

An investor proposing to borrow for the purchase of securities should be aware that a purchase with borrowed monies involves greater risk than a purchase using cash resources only. The extent of that risk is a determination to be made by each purchaser and will vary depending on the circumstances of the purchaser and the securities purchased.

Discuss the risks associated with leveraged mutual fund purchased with an investment funds advisor before investing. Purchases are subject to suitability requirements. Using borrowed money to finance the purchase of securities involves greater risk than a purchase using cash resources only. If you borrow money to purchase securities, your responsibility to repay the loan and pay interest as required by its terms remains the same if the value of the securities purchased declines.
